The hot water springs at Tattapani will cease to exist after the completion of Kol Dam in April 2014. Although the actual completion date of the dam was 2010-2011 and it was feared since then that the hot water springs would no longer exist. However, NTPC Kol Dam always finds out a way to miss deadlines and that’s what they have been doing since 2008.

Tattapani is a popular religious pilgrimage destination in Himachal Pradesh. In the month of January, Makar-Sankranti festival is celebrated at Tattapani and it is popularly called “Mini-Kumbh” of Himachal Pradesh. The festival is celebrated in the last week of January and the day of 26 January is considered an auspicious for a holy dip. People gather in abundance from across the state on the auspicious days of Tara Ratri, Lohri, and 26th January.

Tattapani is also a popular river rafting

destination of Himachal Pradesh. There is a 12 kilometer long river rafting stretch at Tattapani, which attracts adventure sport enthusiasts in huge numbers.

However, after completion of the Kol Dam, the hot water springs will no longer exist. The dam reservoir will engulf the holy bathing site by April 2013. Although the work at the Kol Dam is way behind its scheduled completion date, and it is highly likely that they might miss the April 2013 date as well.

However, if they keep their word this time, then 26 January 2013 is going to be the last chance to take a dip in the holy waters. Although, a provision has been made to revive the springs at a nearby place but that would be enough to keep the religious feelings intact is a tough question.

A Hyderabad based company is working with the state I.P.H Department to revive these springs at Tattapani.

At the same time, the Kol Dam will make it easy for the locals to travel to Mandi, the district headquarters. Today they have to travel 150 Kilometers to reach Mandi and after the completion of the dam, they will reach Mandi by traveling 75 kilometers on the Kol Dam-Tattapani road.
