This year, despite heavy snowfall early in 2011, a record number of Leh bound tourists crossed over the Rohtang Pass.
Commanding officer BRO at Manali, Col Yogesh Naiyar said, “the Manali – Leh road has been officially declared closed to traffic.”
In charge of critical border roads, BRO under Deepak Project is responsible for developing and maintaining vital roads along the India-China border along the disputed MacMohan line in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand.
“Due to repeated snow spells on the higher reaches,” said Col Naiyar, “Deepak Project on November 11 has already closure of this high altitude road.”
Normally the road to Leh through Manali is kept open from June to October and BRO this year had difficulty in keeping the traffic open in the closing week of last month. Last year the road was officially closed on October 31.
As of now only locals are allowed to cross the Rohtang Pass. Every year, even before the pass is closed and opened, the natives of the valley walk over this pass on foot.
The hope of the valley and the tourism sector now lie on the Rohtang Tunnel, which is expected to be completed by 2014. Once the tunnel is constructed, vehicular traffic can move across the pass throughout the year.
