Pong Dam Wetland in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh is a safe haven for the migratory birds coming from the distant corners of the world. At the same time, it is photography heavens for those who want to ‘shoot’ birds in mid-air.
Every year thousands of migratory birds visit the wet land area during winters. The very first migratory bird was seen in this wetland in the year 1984 and since then more than 15 lakh birds have visited this wetland. As much as 100 species of birds are reported to have visited this wetland so far.
The year 2012 is going to be a record-breaking year if we were to believe the statistics put forward by the state Forest Department. In 2011, more than 1,30,000 migratory birds were recorded in the wetland. And considering the harsh winters of 2012, across the globe, the wetland is definitely going to see a record breaking number this year.
