Renuka Wetland welcomes migratory birds| 223 so far, more to come

Migratory bird habitat in Himachal Pradesh, Pong Dam Wetland has been host to about 50,000 birds so far in 2012, some of which have flown down from Siberia and Central Asia.

At the same time, migratory birds have started flocking at the Renuka Lake wetland in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh. In the last five days, more than 200 migratry birds have landed at the Renuka Wetland. This year, a record number of migratory birds are expected to arrive at the Renuka Wetland. The number has already multiplied by 12 times in the last five days.

Another popular destination to watch migratory birds in Himachal Pradesh is Pong Dam Wetland in the Kangra District. If you are fond of ‘shooting’ birds, the Pong Dam wetland is the best place for you. Photography enthusiasts call it ‘Photography Heavens’ of Himachal Pradesh. In the current season, starting from November 2012, more than 1,50,000 birds are expected to arrive from across the world.

In the last five days, more than 200 migratory birds have landed at the Renuka Wetland. This year, a record number of migratory birds are expected to arrive at the Renuka Wetland. The number has already multiplied by 12 times in the last five days.

The Renuka Wetland is spread over an area of 402 hectares and it is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh. Renuka Lake is the largest natural lake of the state and these migratory birds have been coming here since early 2000.

According to the Forest Department Survey major bird species visiting the Renuka Wetland are Small Egret, Mallard, Cormorant, and Moor Hen. As of December 7′ 2012, 2 small egrets, 165 moor hen, 11 mallard, and 35 coots have been identified in the Renuka Wetland. The Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary is another place for wildlife lovers in the Sirmour District.

Renuka Wetland is one of the recognized wetlands of the country under the Ramsar Convention. The other two Ramsar Wetlands in the state are Pong Dam Wetland in Kangra District and Chander Taal Wetland in the Lahaul Spiti District.
